Goal Setting

Assalamualaikum friends...

Goal Setting is the first topic in Real Leadership Workshop Training. Here I will share a little on how to set our goal (which I learnt from the workshop) and Locke's Goal Setting Theory from a website.

There are few steps and aspects which can direct us to achieve our goal:

1) Focus on the outcome that you are expecting

Decide the aspect of life you really want to improve and set the specific outcome that you are looking for.

I choose to improve my Academic Performance, so my specific outcome is to graduate with a CGPA of 3.7 and above. I also want to work on my Religious Development, and my specific outcome for this aspect of life is to read Quran everyday, at least 2 pages with its meaning.

2) Aligning with your Values and Principles

Answer this question: Are the goals something you truly want to achieve? If no, then it might not be a good goal.

YES!! I truly want to achieve it! =D So, I can proceed with the next step...

3) Identify the Obstacles and the Challenges

In this part you have to decide if you could start and maintain your goal, and who are your role models.

So far I got a CGPA of 3.69, so in syaa Allah, I will try my best to get more than 3.7 this semester and maintain it. For the second aspect, I have started and alhamdulillah, maintaining it...
And my role models are my own uncle and my elder brother... :-)

4) Goal Sizing

If your goal is too big, break it into a smaller goals, else if it is too small, then make it bigger.

For the academic performance, yes I have divided it into smaller tasks. Goal sizing of religious development is just fine.

5) Resources

List down the resources you already have and you need to get to achieve your goal.

I already have...
my books and notes, PTPTN loan, friends and lecturers, Quran with meaning, and plenty of time

I need...
well, I hope my brother could add "teach my sissy" in his planner...

When setting your goal... make sure write it in a positive sentence and follow SMART...

What is SMART?

Specific
Know what you want to achieve

Measureable
You will know that you HAVE to achieve it

Action-Oriented
You could set your steps to achieve it

Realistic
   So you could achieve it

Time-Bound
   Has deadline

Locke's Goal Setting Theory

This theory uses SMART as its basic and introduces 5 principles which helps us to set a better and realistic goals.

The 5 principles are:

Clarity
Set specific goals which is measurable and with time limit

Challenge
Set difficult goals but make sure it is achievable

Commitment
Work consistently to achieve your goal

Feedback
Check your progress regularly to make sure you are right on track

Task Complexity
Make sure the goals are neither too big nor too small
